Crackling is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A damaged recording, audio processing, a loose accessory connection or the speaker itself can produce a similar sound. The useful question is which change makes the symptom appear or disappear. Keep the source and volume consistent while comparing one part of the path at a time.
First identify the output you are actually hearing
Disconnect Bluetooth devices and wired headphones when testing the phone speaker. Check the system's active media output. A call can use the earpiece while a video uses a different speaker, and a browser tone normally follows the media route. Do not assume that every opening in a phone's frame contains an independently testable speaker.
Set a low, comfortable volume. Use a familiar spoken clip without intentional distortion, then run the speaker channel test. Record whether the issue occurs on speech, tones or both. Stop if it sounds uncomfortable; maximum volume is not necessary to establish that crackling repeats.

These are isolation steps, not proofs. Different outputs can use different processing and gain. A clear headphone result does not electrically test the phone's speaker amplifier, and a noisy browser tone does not identify a torn speaker membrane.
Why a tone can sound different from music
A steady tone can make a resonance more noticeable than speech. Some tiny speakers reproduce low frequencies weakly; absence of deep bass alone is not evidence of a new defect. If a sound appears only above a certain volume, repeat once at a lower setting and note the boundary rather than repeatedly driving it louder.
Test left and right browser channels separately if relevant, but remember that mono audio settings or phone speaker design can mix them. Use the headphone balance test for an accessory comparison. These listening tools cannot measure frequency response, distortion percentage or sound pressure.
If the problem began after water exposure
Follow the device manufacturer's drying instructions before more powered testing. Do not charge a wet device or insert objects into its ports. For example, Apple's liquid-detection guidance warns against external heat, compressed air and inserting objects into a wet connector. Use the guidance for your own model rather than assuming all phones tolerate the same treatment.
The optional speaker tone may move some loose surface droplets under some conditions. It cannot measure water removal, repair corrosion or prove that the interior is dry. Repeating it at maximum volume is not a diagnostic plan. Improvement after time or playback can also come from natural drying or a changed output route.
Document a repeatable symptom for repair
Note the clean source used, output route, approximate volume setting and whether the issue repeats in a native app. If a loose case rattles, compare briefly without it when safe. Do not dismantle the speaker or poke through its grille to test a theory.
Persistent distortion across ordinary sources, especially after impact or liquid exposure, warrants professional inspection. A recording of the symptom can help a technician, but a second microphone can introduce its own distortion, so describe what you heard as well. If the complaint is instead that other people cannot hear you, follow the microphone decision path; that concerns a different direction of audio.
